If they tell a person: “Here’s the TV set in front of you, watch three programs, but don’t turn on four or five. Sooner or later he will turn it on, he’s curious about what’s on there, right? It is the same with driving. A person may drive carefully and attentively for a long time, and then there will be a situation when he will rush somewhere, but he does not know how to do it.
There have been a lot of incidents, and I won’t name them, with celebrities, when they were rushing to save somebody or they were late for a plane, and they had very serious accidents, and they crashed. And in that situation of not crashing and not getting into an accident, you have to be able to do that. That’s the first thing.
The second thing. Any accident situation requires such skills, which are developed when you learn sports driving skills. A driver who knows these techniques will be much better at controlling the situation.
These are completely different things. Contravention driving is part of sports driving. It’s the same thing when I’m asked how I feel about competitive drifting. I feel very good about competitive drifting, but it’s part of sports driving. It’s one element of sports driving. And it’s ridiculously easy for a car racer who owns sports driving to do drifting.
It’s not even serious to talk about it, it’s like doing morning calisthenics for an athlete. It’s like saying, I love morning gymnastics, it’s so great, it’s so cool – it’s how it looks in my eyes. It’s all elements of sports driving.
If you have had a course in contra-accidental driving, you have been taught to turn the steering wheel very quickly, from stop to stop, which may help a lot in an emergency situation, especially on a slippery road, when the car is skidding – you need to turn the steering wheel at lightning speed.
But if you have decided to drive fast on a slippery road in winter at some, let’s say, amateur competitions, of which we have a lot, you will not get anywhere with such a steering wheel twist and will be last. It is desirable to know both. Have skills and experience in both sports and contra-vehicle driving.
